Exploring Inclusive Learning through Immersive Technologies at the ATU UDL Conference

Eirmersive member Yvonne Sarsfield, UDL Specialist and Instructional Designer at Atlantic Technological University (ATU), recently facilitated an engaging workshop at the ATU Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Conference, highlighting the potential of immersive technologies to create more inclusive and accessible learning experiences.

Drawing on her expertise in UDL, her involvement in immersive technology projects, and research undertaken as part of her MA in UDL, Yvonne’s workshop explored how virtual reality (VR) can be used to support students who experience anxiety around public speaking. The session provided participants with practical insights into how immersive tools can help learners build confidence in a safe and supportive environment.

A key theme of the workshop was Digital Belonging and the role technology can play in reducing barriers to participation. Through discussion and hands-on demonstrations, participants examined how immersive technologies can support learner variability, foster inclusion, and create more equitable opportunities for engagement, principles that sit at the heart of Universal Design for Learning.

The workshop also highlighted the importance of collaboration in driving innovation across the education sector. Yvonne was joined by colleagues including John Hough (ATU), who supported the practical VR demonstrations, and Iris Kerssebeeck (MSLETB), whose contributions reinforced the value of partnership in advancing inclusive practice. Thanks were also extended to VirtualSpeech for providing licences that enabled participants to experience the platform firsthand.

The strong interest from attendees reflects a growing recognition of the potential for immersive technologies to support confidence-building, accessibility, and student success. As organisations across education continue to explore innovative approaches to teaching and learning, workshops such as this demonstrate the important role immersive technologies can play in creating more inclusive learning environments.

Congratulations to Yvonne and all those involved, and thank you to the ATU UDL Conference organising team and participants for fostering such valuable conversations around inclusion, innovation, and the future of learning.

Eirmersive is proud to showcase the work of members who are advancing the use of immersive technologies to create meaningful impact across education, training, and industry.
