Glasseye at Outernet London

By Camille Donegan, CEO at Eirmersive

Recently I got to experience Outernet London - 'an immersive entertainment district bringing together breath-taking arts, culture and music experiences for all the family.'

And the thing that really hit me (you’ll see it in the video) is the scale. The screens aren’t “big” - they’re architectural. You’re not watching content, you’re inside it.

People are just walking in from the Tube station and suddenly they’re surrounded by these beatuiful stories and interactive experiences, no headset, no setup, no booking! - just straight into an immersive experience. Interesting shift and an interesting business model. Outernet seed fund artistic content funded by the massive marketing led billboards on the outside of the building.

We talk a lot about XR in terms of devices and demos, but this is different - this is shared, public, accessible, cultural experience at city scale.

It definitely made me think about the kind of work we’re all making… and what it takes for it to hold attention in a space like this as well as another format for immersive creators, re-use assets, worlds and characters from headset to dome to immersive spaces.

Have you been to Outernet? What did you think?

Following on from my visit to Outernet London - this was a proud one; seeing our super talented members Glasseye up there, on those screens, in that space with not just one but two stunning artworks.

The Glasseye projects really leveraged the space and layout of screens so that you are transported into magical realms, forgetting the tube station next door, the bustle of London and the fact that the venue is essentially a layout of super high resolution rectangular led panels.

In 'The Intelligence Garden' you get this sense of systems, nature, data all blending together around you.

The 'Summer Palace' was a different tone, more atmospheric, fantastical, cinematic - you are whisked up into infinity in the tale.

For me, it’s exactly what we want to see more of - brilliant Irish immersive work showing up on a global stage and standing confidently in it.

Huge credit to the team and particularly Agustin Vidal Saavedra for his stunning art direction👏
