How XR Ireland is Helping Shape the Future of Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in Latvia
What began as an international business connection has evolved into a real-world demonstration of how immersive technologies can transform one of the world's most highly regulated manufacturing sectors.
Through the European-funded XR2INDUSTRY programme, Irish immersive technology company XR Ireland and Latvian pharmaceutical manufacturer PharmIdea Latvia have embarked on a pioneering collaboration exploring the role of augmented reality (AR), extended reality (XR) and embedded artificial intelligence in sterile pharmaceutical production.
The initiative is about more than technology alone. It represents a growing partnership between Ireland and Latvia, bringing together expertise in advanced manufacturing, pharmaceutical production and immersive technologies to address some of the industry's most persistent challenges.
From International Connections to Industrial Innovation

The collaboration was facilitated through engagement with the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LTRK), demonstrating how strategic international partnerships can evolve into tangible innovation projects.
As part of the XR2INDUSTRY project, XR Ireland travelled to Riga to meet leaders from Latvia's industrial and business sectors, including LTRK Chair Katrīna Zariņa and representatives from the Association of the Latvian Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry. Discussions focused on how European-developed XR technologies can support productivity, workforce development and competitiveness across critical industries.
Those conversations quickly moved beyond theory.
What followed was the launch of a practical pilot programme that placed XR Ireland's technology directly into one of Latvia's most advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing environments.
Bringing XR Into the Clean Room
At PharmIdea's facility in Olaine, the partnership is testing how immersive technologies can support manufacturing operations where precision, compliance and quality are paramount.
PharmIdea employees are using European-manufactured AR devices, software and onboard AI systems while working within production environments. The technology provides operators with immediate access to electronic batch records, process instructions, procedures and diagrams through transparent displays, allowing them to remain hands-free while carrying out manufacturing tasks.
The objective is straightforward: deliver the right information at the right time, exactly where it is needed.
For highly regulated pharmaceutical operations, where human error can have enormous financial and operational consequences, even small improvements can have a significant impact.

According to data cited during the project, human error has historically contributed to between 85% and 90% of manufacturing deviations within regulated environments. Individual deviations can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of euro, while the loss of an entire production batch can result in substantially greater financial consequences.
By integrating immersive guidance, electronic batch records and AI-assisted workflows directly into day-to-day operations, XR Ireland believes that many of these risks can be reduced while also accelerating workforce readiness.
The project team estimates that the technology could cut employee onboarding and line-training times by more than 50%, helping operators become compliant and operationally ready much faster than with traditional training approaches.
Testing Technology Where It Matters Most
One of the most notable aspects of the initiative is that the technology is being evaluated in a live pharmaceutical manufacturing environment by PharmIdea's own operational teams.
Over a multi-day assessment period, production staff operated XR Ireland's systems on active biopharmaceutical production lines, allowing both organisations to observe how the technology performs under real operational conditions rather than in a simulated setting.
For XR Ireland, this provides a valuable opportunity to validate its European-developed hardware, software and AI capabilities within one of the most demanding manufacturing environments possible.
For PharmIdea, it offers the chance to evaluate whether immersive technologies can improve productivity, strengthen compliance and reduce the operational impact of manufacturing errors.
More broadly, the project contributes to Europe's ongoing efforts to develop sovereign digital technologies that support industrial competitiveness while reducing dependence on external technology ecosystems.
Strengthening Irish-Latvian Collaboration
The significance of the project was highlighted during a visit to PharmIdea by Ireland's Ambassador to Latvia, Her Excellency Marcella Smyth, accompanied by representatives of the Latvian Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The visit underscored the growing economic relationship between Ireland and Latvia and the role that innovation-driven partnerships can play in strengthening collaboration between both countries.
Speaking during the visit, Ambassador Smyth described the initiative as an example of how European cooperation can drive innovation, productivity and competitiveness, while demonstrating the practical value of cross-border collaboration.
